Heavy cyclone storm expected in TN, AP

Chennai: Several districts of Tamil Nadu in general and Chennai in particular and Andhra Pradesh coast is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds from May 13, as the very severe cyclonic storm over south Bay of Bengal, remained practically stationary about 600 kms east southeast of the city, area cyclone warning centre, said on May 13.

At 05.30 hours, the storm lay centred near latitude 11.5 degrees north and longitude 85.5 degrees east and the system was likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction towards north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast, the centre said in a cyclone alert bulletin.

In view of the slow movement of the system, adverse weather in the form of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to commence over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh only on May 13.

State of the sea, the bulletin said, was likely to be rough to high along-off north Tamil nadu- south Andhra Pradesh coast.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into open seas, the bulletin added.

Meanwhile, the state government and city corporation were taking precautionary steps.
