Vanity of govts root cause for tensions: Pak team
Wednesday, May 14 2003 17:05 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata: A Pakistani lawmakers delegation on a goodwill mission to India on May 14 said the 'vanity' of
India and Pakistan governments was responsible for the worsening of relations between the two
countries.
"It is the vanity of the governments that has resulted in this situation. But people on either side of the
border don't want war," Member of National Assembly (MNA) M P Bhandara said in an interaction with
members of the commonwealth parliamentary association.
"Governments don't come from the heavens or fall off trees. They are made of people like you and me.
Then why are these evil winds blowing in the sub-continent?" the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) MNA
asked.
Bhandara said not only peace, but trade, tourism and cultural exchanges in the sub-continent were at
stake due to the 'political warfare'.
MNA of Opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Shakeela Rashid said regional peace and integration
was gaining new ground in the world, but South Asia was still lagging behind.
"When Europe is coming closer like never before, why not South Asia?" she asked.
Leader of the delegation and PML (Q) MNA Ishaq Khan Khakwani invited a similar exchange group from
India to visit Islamabad for bolstering people-to-people contact.
