Prayers, processions mark Prophet's birthday

New Delhi: Special prayers, processions and meetings for communal harmony marked Eid-e-Milad-un-
Nabi, Prophet Mohammad's birthday, which was celebrated with traditional fervour throughout the
country on May 15.
Dressed in pristine white kurta pyjamas, men in thousands converged at mosques across the country
and offered prayers.
In Srinagar, a procession on the occasion was taken out in the heart of the city after a gap of 13 years.
Milad procession was banned in the Jammu and Kashmir capital since eruption of militancy fearing its
misuse by militant outfits.
At Hazratbal shrine, on the outskirts of Srinagar, the holy relic of the Prophet were displayed after the
morning prayers.
'Shab-khawani' nightlong prayers were held at the shrine attended by thousands of people.
Women dressed in their traditional best-cooked lavish feast and several families distributed food, fruits
and clothing to the poor on the occasion.
In Kolkata a meeting for communal amity was organised by the All India Minority Forum where eminent
leaders from different walks of life asked people to follow the ideals of Prophet Mohammed and
remember his contribution in uplifting humanity.
In Central Mumbai, a huge procession was organised from the Khilafat house to Crawford Market.
Prophet Mohammed was born in 571 BC in the humble home of Amina and Abdullah of the Banumashi
tribe of Mecca. He later went on to establish the Islamic religion after his
enlightenment at the age of 40.
