15 more victims of Frontier Mail fire identified

Ludhiana: Fifteen more victims, including five of a family from Madhya Pradesh, who perished in the Frontier Mail fire tragedy were identified on May 16 by their relatives at the Civil Hospital.

A total of 28 of the 38 people who died in the incident, including seven women and eight children, have been identified so far.

Six bodies as per "skull count" of the railways and two limb parts remain in the makeshift mortuary at the Civil Hospital, railway officials said.

The five of a family from Sahdol in Madhya Pradesh were identified as Harish Baswani (M-42), Nisha (F- 39), Sonam (M-15), Kishore (M-15) and Sumeet (M-10).

The other identified were Veenu Kumar (M-22, Thiruvananthapuram), Nitin (11) and his sister Megha (5), both of Sasurali in Uttar Pradesh, Anita Bhatia (F-42, Pitampura, Delhi), Kans Kaur (F-40, Khujala village, Gurdaspur) Jai Gopal (M-55, Amritsar), Ganesh Parshad (M-25, Patiala), Rupinderjit Kaur (F-41) and her four-year old son Jaskar (Kapurthala) and Kashmira Singh (M-25, Kapurthala).

The body of Veenu Kumar would tomorrow be airlifted to Kerala from New Delhi, where it was sent Shan- e-Punjab Express, senior divisional commercial manager V Singh said.

He said that the next of kin of 28 victims had been paid an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each. Since foul smell was emanating from the bodies, authorities were expected to wait till May 16 after which a decision on mass cremation of six "skull bodies" and two limb parts could be taken.
