'Khan's appointment as Pak envoy to India not final'
Sunday, May 18 2003 19:35 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad: Hours after Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali announced the appointment of Riaz
Mohammad Khan as new High Commissioner to India, the Foreign Office issued a statement in the wee
hours on May 18 that no final decision has yet been made and that Jamali has been "wrongly quoted".
In a clarification, a foreign office spokesman said Jamali has not been correctly quoted and the final
decision has not been taken as yet by the Prime Minister.
Khan is currently serving as Ambassador to China.
Significantly, the official clarification did not deny Khan's appointment to the post, but only "clarified" that
no decision has been made in this regard.
Meanwhile, speaking to Pakistani media in Beijing, Khan said he had not officially received the
information about his new assignment. He declined to make any further comment "until he assumed the
charge".
