New Delhi: Seeking disciplinary action against police for alleged dereliction of duty, National Commission
for Women (NCW) recommends in-camera trial & compensation for rape victims, of five minor girls who
were allegedly raped by a gang of dacoits in Midnapore district recently.
In a report prepared by a team of the Commission, who visited the state to investigate the matter, it
recommended that in all such cases of victimisation of innocent girls adequate compensation should be
paid to them and their family members by the state government for their rehabilitation, NCW sources told
reporters in New Delhi on May 19.
The team, headed by NCW Member Nafisa Hussain, paid a three-day visit to the state and met police
officials and other administration members. However, the Commission Members could only meet one of
the victims.
The Commission has also recommended that some kind of a vocational training should be provided to
the girls, so that they become self-reliant.
In an incident reminiscent of 2003 February's gang rape at Dhantala that rocked West Bengal, a group
of armed dacoits looted a marriage party and dragged five girls to a nearby jungle near Pathardoba in
West Midnapore district on April 27 night.
The incident occurred when the marriage party was returning in a truck from Chandrakona to Umripota.
