CAS: Govt to set June 15 deadline for broadcasters
Tuesday, May 20 2003 20:55 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government is likely to set June 15 as deadline for broadcasters to fix rates of their pay channels under the proposed conditional access system (CAS).

A notification in this regard is likely to be issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry soon, sources said.

With less than two months left for the scheduled operation of CAS in the four metros, the government wants the broadcasters to make public the rates of their pay channels, since the new system would enable cable television viewers to subscribe only to desired pay channels through a set-top box.

The Ministry has already notified that in the basic tier of free-to-air channels, the maximum rate to be charged by cable operators should be Rs 72 for not less than 30 channels.
