New Delhi: Several Indian nationals were among about 100 foreigners who have been rounded up by
Ugandan authorities in the capital Kampala in the past few days as part of security operations in the
wake of terrorist threats.
The Indian High Commission in Kampala promptly conveyed its concern to the Ugandan authorities first
verbally on May 19 and followed it up with a written complaint.
When contacted on phone from New Delhi, the High Commission officials confirmed that a number of
Indians had been taken to various points by the Ugandan police. Most of them had been released after
validity of their residential status was verified, they said.
"We have expressed our concern over the wHole matter," the officials said adding details were being
sought whether any of them were still in custody.
A report on May 21 night from Kampala said three Indian nationals were refused entry into the country
as part of an ongoing operation against possible terrorist attack.
"We are holding 86 foreigners, mainly Indians and Pakistanis, we suspect to be illegal immigrants and
terror suspects," police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi was quoted as saying.
