US resolution on Iraq set to get unanimous support

United Nations: The United States sponsored resolution to lift sanctions against Iraq is expected to get
near unanimous support when it is put to vote on May 22, with France, Russia and Germany
announcing support to the fourth draft, after Washington made some 90 changes in the original version.
But the basic structure of the fourth draft has not undergone much change and the resolution
authorises the United States and Britain to run the country and have full control over its oil resources for
an indefinite period.
However, as a concession to win support of major powers, Washington agreed to a Council review of the
implementation of the resolution after 12 months, which would also consider any further measures that
might be necessary.
Diplomats expect China also to vote for the resolution, but the position of Syria, the only Arab member of
the 15-member Council, was not clear, though indications were it that might not participate in the
meeting.
The resolution remains in effect till a permanent internationally recognised Iraqi government is
established. But that could take several years and in the meantime, the occupying powers would in
charges. Both the United States and Britain in a letter to the Council have agreed to undertake the
obligation of occupying power.
Unlike during American unsuccessful effort to get the explicit Council authorisation to take military action
against Iraq, which was vehemently opposed by Russia, France and China, the mood this time was to
find an acceptable language.
