Hyderabad: The child swapping case in the government maternity hospital in Hyderabad ended with the
DNA report in favour of Latha, whose baby boy was swapped with a baby girl delivered by one
Mahmooda Begum on April 16.
"The blood samples of the two ladies and the two babies were sent to city-based centre for DNA
fingerprinting and diagnostic last week. Its report has gone in favour of Latha," additional commissioner
of city police A K Khan told reporters.
"Now we are proceeding against Mahmooda Begum under sections 419 and 201 of Indian penal Code
(IPC) dealing with impersonation and concealment of evidence," Khan said.
Latha, a native of neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, delivered a baby boy and due to "negligence" of
hospital staff, she was handed over a baby girl, which she refused to accept. She registered a case
against the hospital at Charminar police station.
During investigation, it was found that the staff of the hospital had handed over the baby boy to
Mahmooda Begum, who escaped from the hospital unnoticed.
However, the emotional drama ended when Mahmooda Begum was traced and interrogated, resulting in
exchange and handing over of the babies to their respective mothers on May 12.
