Mumbai: A deputy commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was shot dead and four
women constables held hostage by a junior constable at the security hold area of the Sahar Terminal at
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on May 24.
The deputy commandant, Karandekar, sustained a bullet injury in his stomach around 17:30 hours (IST)
in the security hold of 11-C after a constable fired five rounds from his self-loading rifle, airport officials
said.
Karandekar, however, succumbed to his injuries en route to a suburban hospital.
The constable also held four women colleagues as hostages even as the airport officials summoned
commandos to the spot to disarm the accused and to free the hostages, who are still confined to the
security hold area more than two hours after the shoot-out.
According to a senior official, the constable's parents were being brought to the spot to appeal to the
accused to lay down his arms and surrender.
The reason behind the outburst was yet to be ascertained. However, officials suspect that the constable
had resorted to the act since his leave had not been sanctioned.
Meanwhile, sophisticated surveillance monitoring system installed in the airport was trying to track the
movement of the constable and his hostages.
