Mumbai: Apparently angry over refusal of leave, a CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) constable on
May 24 shot dead his deputy commandant and held six of his colleagues captive for tense seven hours
at Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport, before surrendering at the persuasion of his parents.
All the six hostages, including five women, were released without any harm ending the high drama that
began at 5.30 pm (IST) when 22-year-old Raj Namdeo shot and seriously wounded deputy commandant
A Karandekar from his self loading rifle.
Forty-nine year old Karandekar was rushed to hospital, but he succumbed to injuries on the way.
After the hostage drama was over, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who himself was at the
airport along with senior police officials to handle the crisis, told reporters that he sent the constable's
parents inside the security hold area to assure him that no commando action would be taken and he
should surrender, which he did.
Namdeo was arrested by police soon after his surrender and be would charged with murder of the
deputy commandant, he said.
Asked what prompted the constable to kill the deputy commandant, Bhujbal said it seems he had several
complaints including about his leave and long duty hours.
