Geneva: Former United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt has been appointed as chairman of the South Centre, a body of 46 developing countries that champions the cause of South- South co-operation.

Boutros-Ghali replaces Gamani Corea of Sri Lanka, who resigned due to health reasons, a South Centre press release issued in Geneva said on May 26.

The new chairman will have a three-year term. Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria would continue as vice chairman of the South Centre Board, the release said.

Acknowledging the honour bestowed on him, Boutros-Ghali highlighted the South Centre's role at this juncture in the evolution of international affairs and in promoting various forms of South-South co- operation.
