17 climbers from Indo-Nepal team conquer Everest

New Delhi: Indian Army achieved another milestone in the annals of mountaineering when 17 more members of a joint Indo-Nepal Army Expedition successfully scaled Mount Everest on May 26.

There were six climbers each from the Indian Army, the Royal Nepalese Army and also five sherpas, an official release said.

After the first summit on May 22, this is the second summit of Mount Everest by the joint Indo Nepal Army Everest Massif Expedition.

On the Golden Jubilee of the first ascent of Mount Everest from South Col in 1953, this was the first team to climb Mount Everest from the direction of the South Col, it said.

Chief of Army Staff Gen N C Vij flagged off the team on March 10 and it was jointly led by Col Ashok Abbey of the Indian Army and Lt Col Surya Sen Thakur of Royal Nepalese Army.
