US intelligence apprehends fresh terror attack
Monday, May 26 2003 11:39 Hrs (IST)

New York: Warning that the war on terror is entering a "more and dangerous" phase, intelligence officials in the United States apprehend a terrorist strike on the 'homeland' in next 30 to 90 days, according to an "internal" intelligence document.

Counter-terror analysts at CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) were alarmed last week when it discovered a cryptic posting on Alsaha.com, an Abu Dhabi-based web site that offers bulletin boards where Arabic speakers can advertise for wives and exchange messages about sports, politics and the true meaning of jihad, a report in the 'Newsweek' magazine said on May 26.

"Oh! brothers, further attacks are to come in the next 48 hours," it read. "All good Muslims in New York, Boston and other cities on the seacoast should leave," the message said.

The FBI and CIA, 'Newsweek' says, had no other direct warnings of an attack, but analysts could not rule out the possibility that the terrorists were planting disinformation to stir panic.

The terrorist "chatter" level, the report says, is on the rise again. Electronic intercepts from tapped phones and spy satellites suggest that al-Qaida operatives around the world were planning something.

The Federal authorities, it says, have identified a few al-Qaida operatives already in the United States and picked up one of them who disclosed that he had been told to target a bridge and an airliner.
