New Delhi: India on May 26 remained non-committal on sending troops to Iraq but decided to send back
its Ambassador and hold consultations with the UN and others on the parameters and scope of the UN
Security Council appeal to member states to contribute to stability and security of the war-ravaged
country.
India's Ambassador to Iraq B B Tyagi, who moved to Jordan in the wake of the US-led attack, will go
back to Baghdad to get a firsthand feedback on the ground situation in the country.
The Iraq situation as also the US request for Indian participation in the peace-keeping process there
figured at the two-hour long meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
Briefing reporters, Foreign Secertary Kanwal Sibal said it was decided that the External Affairs Ministry
(MEA) will initiate consultations with the UN, including UN Secretary General's special advisor, authorities
in Iraq and other concerned countries "to obtain clarifications on the parameters and scope of the
appeal" made in UNSC Resolution, 1483.
The MEA will report back to the CSS, Sibal said adding while there was no timeframe for it, the
assessment exercise would be completed as quickly as possible.
