'Gunman still tracking Indian businessman in Bangkok'
Tuesday, May 27 2003 17:54 Hrs (IST)

Bangkok: The wife of an Indian businessman, who was seriously injured by a gunman in Bangkok on May 25, has claimed that her husband's attacker had called her on her mobile several times asking the victim's whereabouts and his condition, sources said on May 27.

The Thai police have identified the businessman as Syed Rahman although Indian media said the victim was underworld don Ejaz Lakdawala of the Chotta Rajan group.

It is also not known if Rahman, who received gunshot wounds in his neck, arm and body, entered Thailand under an assumed name or if he and Lakdawala are one and the same man.

His wife claimed that the shooter was an Indian Muslim based in Pakistan and was known to her husband. On May 25 night, when the victim and his wife were waiting for a taxi after dinner in a Bangkok area, the attacker walked up to them and opened fire on Rahman at close range.

According to her, the gunman fled the scene but had since made several calls on her mobile. She claimed that it was the gunman as she recognized his voice.

Rahman was critically injured in the incident with a major artery severed. Police said he could be shifted to another hospital for security reasons.

Chotta Rajan was himself attacked by a rival gang here in September 2000 and a few months later escaped from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment. His whereabouts are not known since.
