Teachers' recruitment test marred by violence
Tuesday, May 27 2003 14:44 Hrs (IST)

Ranchi: At least six persons, including two policemen, were injured in a clash and more than 200 persons arrested on May 27 during the controversial teachers' recruitment test that got off amidst violence on the second day of the 48-hour Jharkhand bandh called by pro-domicile groups.

Police opened fire on a mob when they tried to disrupt examination at Namkom which led to a clash between the police force and bandh supporters leaving six injured.

One seriously injured person was admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences.

Deputy Commissioner Jai Shanker Tiwari said a petrol bomb was lobbed inside another examination centre, St Louis High School at Harmu.

However, swift action by the strong contingent of security force controlled the situation.

A truck was burnt down near Karmatoli.

In Jamshedpur, when Jharkand Mukti Morcha (JMM) activists tried to forcibly stop examination at a centre at Khasmahal in the steel city, police intervened and in the ensuing encounter several rounds of fire were exchanged.

Nobody, however, was injured, but 150 JMM workers were arrested. Fifty more arrests had been made from other parts of the city.

Another pro-domicile group hurled petrol bombs on a truck, laden with steel sheets, at Belaipahari on the national highway outside the city.
