Partial response for partial Meghalaya bandh

Shillong: The 12-hour bandh in four districts of Meghalaya on May 28 evoked partial response although
normal life was affected in the state capital, police said.
The bandh has not affected normal life in Jaintia hills district while it was partial in West Khasi hills and
Ri-bhoi districts. In the East Khasi hills, except Shillong, there was not much effect of the bandh, DIG
(Eastern Range) B L Buam told reporters.
There were no reports of any untoward incident so far, he said.
The state capital Shillong, however, wore a deserted look with all shops, central and state government
offices remaining closed. Police pickets were posted and patrolling vehicles were seen on the main
thoroughfares.
Police escort was also provided for those passenger vehicles plying on the national highway through
Shillong, although no public transport was available.
The bandh was called by the KSU (Khasi Students Union) to protest a shoot-out incident in a city locality
on May 23, which claimed a civilian's life and injured a CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawan.
Blaming the CRPF for creating trouble, the KSU also demanded its withdrawal from the urban areas of
the town.
The state government replaced the CRPF with Meghalaya police battalion in the particular locality and
ordered the DIG (Eastern Range) to inquire the incident.
