BSE: SENSEX stable during morning trading
Wednesday, May 28 2003 11:36 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: The SENSEX once again opened firm and rallied past 3100-mark after the overnight reaction, in line with a turnaround in software stocks during the morning trading on the Stock Exchange, Mumbai (BSE) on May 28 on fresh buying prompted by a sharp upsurge on Wall Street last night.

Reacting positively to a sharp rally in the Nasdaq Composite Index that spurted by 3.1 per cent to its highest close in nearly a year, foreign funds were believed to have been making purchases in IT stocks at prevailing lower levels.

The BSE Sensitive Index opened remarkably up at 3093.72 as against may 27's close of 3081.94 and later rose to a high at 3110.55 before being quoted at 3091.98 at 10.30 am.

IT majors like Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computers, Wipro and a few others which were under pressure for the past couple of weeks due to appreciating Indian rupee to the US dollar, showed marked gains.

Select Bank and PSU shares, however, were quoted moderately lower due to consistent selling by local funds.

Among the top gainers, Aztec Software were quoted up by 7.74 per cent, SAIL by 5.12 per cent, Moser Baer by 4.47 per cent, Shyam Tele by 4.24 per cent, Silverline by 4.00 per cent, Pentamedia by 3.91 per cent, MIRC Elect by 3.61 per cent, Mascot by 3.51 per cent, Infotech Ent by 3.47 per cent and Hughes software by 3.36 per cent.

TN Petro, Oriental Bank, IBP, SCI, Dabur India, Telco and Grasim Ind showed moderate falls.
