'Kashmir to burn this summer if peace bid fails'
Wednesday, May 28 2003 16:10 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Pakistan is preparing to flood Kashmir with suicide squads to carry out waves of attacks by
militants mainly drawn from renamed Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in case the present peace initiative failed,
reports a Pakistani newspaper.
"Pakistan is preparing to flood Kashmir with jehadis (militants) if talks fail...the bulk of militants to be sent
across the line of control (LoC) will be drawn from the renamed LeT," reports the US-based Pakistani
weekly newspaper 'South Asia Tribune'.
Quoting senior Pakistani officials, it said, "They are preparing the ground for waves of suicide bombers
and attacks in the Valley."
The move, according to the weekly, is because Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf believes that India
called the Agra summit because of militant violence in Kashmir.
It said LeT was being depended more to carry out the task because Pakistan was presently "avoiding
using of Jaish-e- Mohammed (JeM) because it is tainted with links to al-Qaida and is being closely
watched by Washington."
"Islamabad also sees Masood Azhar (leader of JeM) as too independent and as becoming too powerful,"
the paper said, adding the "authorities were moving to sideline him."
Jehadi-watchers say Hafeez Saeed, chief of LeT, would be the point-man if Kashmir burns this summer,
it said adding Saeed had close links with Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), the ISI and in the good books
of Islamabad.
The newspaper said Lashkar, which was nurtured by the ISI, was more amenable to Pakistan's control
than Jaish and that Islamabad had also begun to work with lower LeT cadre rather than those known to
the US.
