PMK favours reservation for economically backward
Thursday, May 29 2003 16:57 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) on May 29, said it favoured reservations for the economically backward people in the forward community, but said it should not affect the present reservation for the OBCs (Other Backward classes) and dalits.

Welcoming BJP's (Bharatiya Janatha Party) resolution on the issue, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss told reporters that a Constitutional amendment was needed to provide reservation on economic criteria.

He said any reservation to the economically backward in the forward community should not affect in any way the existing reservation to OBCs and dalits.

It was better to think on reservation on the basis of population of each community, he said adding that if that was achieved, it would be a great victory for the social justice movement.

Welcoming the resignation of Gingee N Ramachandran from Vajpayee ministry following the arrest of his private assistant Perumalsamy in the 'transfer for money' scam, he said the scam would not affect the image of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government at the Centre in any way.

If the government had wanted it could have buried the entire issue, he said.

He demanded a white paper on the Tamil Nadu's economy as the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had recently claimed that she was able to put the econony in the rails.

If her statement was true, the ban on recruitment should be lifted in the state and all the concessions withdrawn to the state government staff should be restored, he said.
