Ajit lashes out at BJP, rules out return to NDA
Saturday, May 31 2003 17:08 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Lashing out at his erstwhile political ally, former Union Minister Ajit Singh has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of ignoring the "real issues" and said there was no question of returning to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold even if the Prime Minister asked him.

Singh, who resigned as Union Agriculture Minister, said the main reason for his exit from the government was the "continuous conflict" with the Finance Ministry and charged Finance Minister Jaswant Singh with having an "anti-farmer attitude".

In an interview to 'The Week', the Rashtriya Lok Dal leader said he had to fight it out with Jaswant Singh for "every little concession" for farmers.

Alleging that Jaswant did not understand rural issues and was "just not interested in farmers", he said the Finance Minister opposed every move made by the Agriculture Ministry to tackle the fallout of drought last year.

Asked if he would return to the NDA if the Prime Minister asked him, he said, "There is no question of going back. The BJP is trying to break up smaller regional parties which are its allies," he said.
