Shetty's bail petition case posted for June 3
Monday, June 2 2003 15:57 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court on June 2 posted for June 3 the hearing on bail application of Surendra Shetty, father of actress Shilpa Shetty, in a case of alleged extortion filed against him and two others by Surat police.

Shetty, whose anticipatory bail was rejected by a local court in Surat on May 30, had moved the High Court, which fixed June 3 for hearing.

Shetty's advocate S V Raju filed the bail application and justice A H Mehta fixed June 3 as the date for hearing.

The Surat court had rejected the anticipatory bail of Shetty, holding that there was prima facie evidence of his involvement in the alleged crime.

The court had also turned down Surendra's plea for a 15-day stay on its order to enable the accused to file an appeal in Gujarat High Court.

It is alleged that Shilpa's parents – Surendra and Sunanda, had hired a gangster to recover from an industrialist Rs 80 lakh dues of their daughter who had modelled for Praful Sarees a few years back.

Police have claimed to have recorded telephonic talks between a gangster and the victim Pankaj Agrawal as well as between Shilpa's parents and Agrawal which revealed extortion threats.

Surendra has, however, denied the allegation saying the conversation was fabricated.
