Heat wave toll in Andhra Pradesh rises to 884
Monday, June 2 2003 11:10 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: The toll in Andhra Pradesh, reeling under severe heat wave conditions for the last three weeks, has increased to 884, with 89 more deaths recorded during the last 24 hours.

State relief commissioner D Rosaiah said the worst-affected coastal districts are experiencing continuously shifting temperature between 45.5 to 47 degree celsius and the situation would continue to remain the same for another two days.

Hyderabad, which on June 1 recorded temperature of 43.8 degree celsius, highest of the current season, forced the people to remain indoors.

Added to this is acute drinking water scarcity in many areas of the old city, as people remained thirsty with two major reservoirs draining up due to failure of monsoon for the past two years.
