Dinakar charges government with trying to fix him
Tuesday, June 3 2003 15:29 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: Giving a new twist to a spate of allegations, including attempt to murder made against him by another former top ranking police official, controversial former Karnataka director general of police (DGP) C Dinakar on June 3 charged that the state government was trying to seek revenge on him for his book on the kidnap of actor Rajkumar by forest brigand Veerappan.

"The S M Krishna government is hostile to me, is trying to fix me and implicate me in a criminal case. The government wants to settle scores with me," Dinakar alleged at a news conference in the wake of allegations levelled by former DGP (home guards) J E George against him.

George, in a police complaint, has levelled various charges including attempt to murder, adultery, robbery and criminal intimidation against his (George's) (estranged) wife, Sheela and Dinakar. Divorce proceedings between George and Sheela, who is working as an assistant to Dinakar, are pending in a family court.

Flatly denying the allegations, Dinakar said Krishna is "terribly angry" with him ever since the publication of the book and "wants to settle a score" with him. "Government wants to arrest me, put me behind bars and humiliate me," he claimed.

Dinakar had claimed in his book "Rajkumar: Veerappan's prize catch" that the state government had paid a huge ransom to Veerappan for securing Rajkumar's release and had also come out with an account of what he claimed had happened behind the scenes.

Dinakar also charged the state government with trying to scuttle a probe ordered by the J Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu on the Rajkumar kidnapping issue vis-a-vis his book by trying to "destroy" his credibility.

According to him, superintendent of police (SP) and additional SP of Tamil Nadu's vigilance and anti- corruption unit last week came to meet him to record his statement in connection with the case, but he told them he would do so in the presence of a top officer.

Now, additional DG of the unit was scheduled to meet him on June 7 in this regard.

The Karnataka government had dismissed allegations of Dinakar about ransom payment. Dinakar is also facing a defamation suit filed by Krishna's son-in-law Siddartha for making some charges against him also in the book released last year.

Dinakar alleged that the state government was "fabricating" documents to "fix" him and also charged security advisor to the state government T Srinivasulu of being a part of the conspiracy to implicate him in a criminal case.

Prior to George's complaint, Sheela had also lodged a complaint accusing the former of harassment.

Meanwhile, Dinakar was granted anticipatory bail by a sessions court on June 2 till the next hearing on June 4.
