TN cops bust gang printing US Dollars, certificates

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu police on June 3 claimed to have busted a gang involved in printing and
circulation of counterfeit US Dollars and certificates of various types with the arrest of four persons and
seizure of US Dollars worth Rs 25 lakh from the famous Burma Bazar in the city.
Besides the seizures and arrest of Kaza, Christy, Sathya and Dorai, the police on June 2 also seized
negatives for printing the currency, ADGP of crime branch-CID S Ramani told reporters in Chennai.
Two others were also arrested earlier following the surrender of one Muthalagan, the kingpin of the
gang, in the court of a city magistrate on May 20 2003.
Following the arrest of Muthalagan the police seized convocation and degree certificates of some
universities, mark sheets, income certificates, legal heir certificates and birth certificates among other
things, the ADGP said.
Muthalagan, who owned a printing press and had contracts with some universities to print their
certificates, printed more than the print orders and sold them after making necessary entries in the
certificates.
Last year the CB-CID had also seized fake US Dollars valued at over Rs 1.53 crore and had arrested
one person Rajamanickam, a member of the gang, he said.
