Medha Patkar arrested, admitted to hospital
Wednesday, June 4 2003 22:21 Hrs (IST)
Nasik: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar was on June 4 arrested and forcibly
admitted to the Civil Hospital after her condition deteriorated on the sixth day of her indefinite fast,
demanding rehabilitation of tribals affected by the Sardar Sarovar project.
Police said Patkar was picked up from the venue of the fast in front of the divisional commissioner's
office, as she was continuously vomiting and refusing to undergo a medical check-up.
Talking to reporters at the hospital, Patkar said she would decide about ending her fast only after
receiving assurance from Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on rehabilitation of tribals.
"Our activist Pratibha Shinde, former PDF minister Bhai Vaidya and socialist Mrinal Gore had a meeting
in Mumbai with Shinde, Water Supply Minister R R Patil and chief secretary Ajit Nimbalkar regarding
rehabilitation of tribals and final decision will be taken after a meeting between government officials and
NBA tomorrow (June 5)," she said.
Patkar said the police also rounded up more than 300 activists, "who were opposing my arrest".
She demanded that police release the NBA activists unconditionally.
Meanwhile, Minister of state for Home Kripashankar Singh said in Mumbai that Patkar had not been
arrested but just taken to the hospital by a police team after her condition deteriorated.
