Orai (UP): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal on June 4 described Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee as an "opportunist", who oscillated between secularism and nationalism to "suit his
political motives".
Attacking the Prime Minister's peace initiatives with Pakistan, the VHP international president told
reporters that all such efforts in the past had not yielded any results.
Singhal asked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to independently contest the coming elections on the Ram
Temple issue in order to gain clear majority.
"The BJP should contest the coming elections independently on the temple issue in order to gain clear
majority," Singhal, who was in Orai to take part in a Bajrang Dal programme, told reporters.
Singhal said the VHP's temple movement was not aimed at merely ensuring the construction of a grand
temple in Ayodhya, but also to "put brakes on the Islamisation of the country".
He called for controlling the growing Muslim population, following which he said the country might face a
threat of another division in the next 50 years.
