Nasik: The condition of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar, who was forcibly
admitted to hospital by police on June 4 after her condition deteriorated on the sixth day of her fast, was
improving, doctors said.
Dr Madhukar Patil, surgeon of Nasik civil hospital where Patkar has been admitted, said after examining
the anti-dam activist on June 5 morning that her kidneys were functioning normally and she slept well
last night.
Patil, however, said Patkar cannot be discharged on June 5 due to the presence of some ketone bodies
in her urine.
Patkar, on indefinite fast, demanding rehabilitation of tribals affected by Sardar Sarovar project, was
removed by police from the venue of her protest outside Nasik road divisional commissioner's office
after her condition deteriorated and she began to vomit. She had been continuously refusing medical
help.
Meanwhile, about 200 NBA activists arrested on June 4 evening when they protested removal of Patkar
from the protest venue, were released early on June 5 on personal bonds.
Taking up Patkar's cause, they stared their indefinite dharna in front of the commissioner's office from
June 5, NBA activist Geetanjali Chavan said.
Chavan claimed, "Since talks were in progress in the state secretariat and some positive results were
expected, city police rushed to our dharna spot and arrested us."
