Peace initiative to top Advani's agenda in US, UK
Friday, June 6 2003 10:21 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: India's fresh peace initiative with Pakistan and the global fight against terrorism are expected to dominate the agenda of talks Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani will have with top US and British leaders during his 12-day visit to the two countries beginning on June 7.

The visit assumes significance as it comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's talks with US President George W Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Jacques Chirac and Chinese President Hu Jintao in St Petersburg last week.

Advani will hold wide-ranging discussions with the US leadership and reinforce the need for ending cross-border terrorism to create conducive atmosphere for talks, official sources said.

Among those he is scheduled to meet in the US are Vice-President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, attorney general John Ashcroft and newly appointed Secretary for Homeland Security Tom Ridge.

A meeting with Bush may also take place although it is not scheduled so far, they said.

During his tour of New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and Chicago, he will also interact with American Parliamentarians, major think tanks including Rand Corporation, Indian community and top editors, they said.

Advani's American visit, on the invitation of Cheney, will give boost to India's dialogue on strategic partnership with the US.
