Friday, June 6 2003 18:09 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad: Hyderabad city returned to normal on June 6 after a person was killed and three were
injured during a clash between two communities on June 5.
Local reports said violence broke out in the Muslim dominated Mallepally locality in old Hyderabad when
the hotel staff bashed a person who did not pay his hotel bill. A mob stoned the hotel and Muslim
houses, leading to more tension in the locality, according to eyewitnesses.
"The people were agitated. So we tried to pacify them and told them to wait for the police to come, so
that a settlement could be arrived at. But since the police did not come for an hour, there was chaos.
They attacked the Muslim settlement and stoned the houses. All glasses were broken," Laxman Naidu, a
resident of Mallepally said on June 6.
A Muslim who tried to pacify the mob was injured in the incident and later died in a local hospital. Police
officials said there were conflicting reports about the cause of the clashes.
"There are two versions in the incident. One is that somebody left without paying the tea bill and later
started quarrelling. The second one is that there was a funeral procession, and stone- pelting was
indulged in. We have to investigate the exact reason for the communal tensions," Additional
Commissioner of Police, A K Khan said.
