Dalit-Jat clash claims one life in Punjab

Buta Mandi (Punjab): One person was killed and three injured when lower and upper caste Hindus clashed near Jalandhar town on June 5.

Eyewitnesses said trouble arose when Dalits tried to take part in a religious fair against the wishes of the upper caste Jat community. The two groups each other with swords and burnt vehicles, forcing the police to open fire.

"Today there was a fair, these people were boycotted but they still went. There were clashes and the police fired and cane-charged the mob. After this, the clashes took place at Buta mandi. One person was killed and 11 were injured in the ensuing police firing," said Raunak, a resident of Buta Mandi.

The 11 injured Dalits are being treated at a local hospital. Indefinite curfew has been clamped in the area.
