Bhindranwala conferred "Martyr" status
Friday, June 6 2003 21:25 Hrs (IST)

Amritsar: Nineteen years after he was killed in military operation to flush out terrorists from Golden Temple, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on June 6 declared militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala as a "martyr", coinciding with the anniversary of Operation Blue Star.

Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti while honouring Bhindranwala as "martyr" gave robe of honour to his son Ishar Singh at Akal Takht.

Bhindranwala was killed on June 6, 1984 during the Operation Blue Star.

Vedanti also "honoured" Manjit Singh, brother and leader of All India Sikh Students Federation Amrik Singh, a close associate of Bhindranwala, who is also believed to have died during the operation.
