'Sena to back Vajpayee in keeping with NDA decision'
Friday, June 6 2003 15:10 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: Shiv Sean Member of Parliament (MP) and the party's in charge of its Tamil Nadu unit Shivaji Mane on June 6 said his party was solidly behind A B Vajpayee and the controversy over the leadership issue was an internal matter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"We (Shiv Sena) will only support Vajpayee as Prime Minsiter in keeping with the decision taken by the National Democratic Allies (NDA)," he told reporters after inaugurating a new office of his party's Tamil Nadu chapter.

The Sena, he said, did not support BJP president Venkaiah Naidu's two leader theory.

Referring to the Ram Temple-Masjid imbroglio, he said the Shiv Sena was determined to construct a temple at Ayodhya, immeterial of what was the outcome of the Supreme Court verdict on the issue.

The sena was unhappy over the BJP's alleged changing stands on the construction of the temple, he added.

Commending state Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for introducing the anti-conversion law and Annadaanam scheme, he said the Sena would like to start the latter in others states of the country.

On the Shiv Sena's political agenda for Tamil Nadu, he said the party had launched a membership drive and hoped to enroll at least five lakh members over the next six months.

Asked if his party would try for alliance with any of the Dravidian parties, he said the Shiv Sena would support any party, which stood for 'hindutva'. "Hindutva is the main agenda of the Sena," Mane said.
