NCM hadn't given clearance of 'trishul diksha' to VHP
Saturday, June 7 2003 12:53 Hrs (IST)
Ahmedabad: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Trilochan Singh has categorically
denied that the commission had given "go ahead" to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to
carryout "trishul diksha" in the country.
Talking to reporters on June 7 after a meeting with member of Christian community during the two-day
visit to Ahmedabad, Singh clarified that the "commission had only told VHP that it was against all such
provocations.
"We had not given go ahead for 'trishul diksha'. In the meeting with VHP on May 5, we only expressed
apprehension about the programme," Singh said.
"We are against all such irritation, but at the same time we are not the authority to ban such
programmes," he said.
When pointed out that some minority community organisation have dubbed him as "mouthpiece of the
BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)", Singh merely said, "People keep saying something and we are listening
to it."
Referring to his meeting with member of Christian community, Singh said the Anti-Conversion Bill
recently passed by Gujarat government, police survey of the community, certain objectionable sections
in school text books and fear psychosis were the main points discussed with them.
Singh said the commission has urged the minority community leaders to seek co-operation from the
government instead of acting as a political party.
The commission would meet Muslim community representatives and call on Chief Minister Narendra
Modi besides attending a reception by Sikh Community later in the day.
