'No link between cancer and overhead power lines'
Wednesday, June 11 2003 17:54 Hrs (IST)

London: A new study has cast further doubts over claims that overhead power lines are associated with childhood Leukaemia.

Though most research has yielded no evidence of a link between magnetic fields and childhood cancer, uncertainty remained on the safety of some homes with very high levels of exposure, according to a report in ‘The Telegraph’.

However, the study by the National Radiological Protection Board, in Didcot, Oxon, and Professor Heinz Wolff's team at Brunel University, found no evidence of strong magnetic fields leading to cancer.

Also, there was no evidence of damage to chromosomes after exposing cells for long period to magnetic fields much higher than those near domestic appliances or power lines, the report said.

Furthermore, the study, published in the ‘British Journal of Cancer’ found no change in the DNA repair mechanisms, disruption of which could also lead to cancer, it added.
