Centre defends Sangh Parivar on demolition

New Delhi: The Centre on June 12 came to the rescue of Sangh Parivar organisations over their alleged
role in the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya, asserting before the Liberhan Commission
that it was an "unplanned" event.
"There is no evidence to suggest that there was a conspiracy and plan to demolish the structure,"
Centre's counsel Lala Ram Gupta told the Commission probing the demolition of disputed structure at
Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.
Maintaining that it was an unplanned incident and no organisations could be held responsible for the
demolition, he asserted that it was also outside the scope of terms and reference of the Commission to
inquire into the relationship amongst various organisations on the issue.
"The question of inter-relationship between some organisations such as VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad),
Bajrang Dal, RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) or BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is wholly irrelevant
before the Commission," the Centre said.
The Centre's reply was in response to the Commission's question that contradictions have emerged on
the issue following the evidence of various leaders, who have given conflicting views on the role of these
organisations spearheading the temple movement.
Gupta said the Commission could also not go into the conspiracy angle while giving its findings for the
demolition of the disputed structure.
Elaborating further, the counsel said the Centre as well as BJP's White Paper had termed the demolition
as a sudden act of the 'kar sevaks'.
