Stand-off on gurudwara seize ends with compromise
Friday, June 13 2003 22:14 Hrs (IST)
Jalandhar: The stand-off between Punjab government and over 100 devotees holed up inside the
controversial Talhan gurudwara ended on June 13 following a compromise, paving the way for takeover
of the shrine in the wake of violent clashes between dalits and Jat Sikhs.
The seize of the gurudwara, which began on June 12 night with devotees, Sikh priests and sewadars
locking themselves from inside at the shrine in protest against government's decision to appoint a
receiver for managing it, ended on June 13 evening, as all of them came out following persuasion by the
administration and police.
"As the people who locked themselves came outside, now the gurudwara will be managed by the five-
member Maryada committee and six-member management committee under the guidance of receiver
Inderpreet Singh Kahlon, appointed by the government," deputy commissioner A K Gupta told reporters.
Gupta said no assurance was given to those who had locked themselves inside the gurudwara on the
issue of appointing a receiver, but they were told that police would not take any action against them.
