Three organisations withdraw from Godhra hearings
Monday, June 16 2003 18:56 Hrs (IST)

Vadodara: Taking strong exception to Justice Nanawati's recent remarks that evidence so far did not show any lapse on the `part of Gujarat administration, three organisations have withdrawn from the hearing of the Commission headed by him to probe the post-Godhra riots.

As the Commission began its three-day hearing on June 16, activists of People's Union for Civil Liberty (PUCL), Vadodara Shanti Abhayan (VSA) and Medico Friends Circle (MFC) showed 'Go back Nanavati' placards to the Commission members.

The activists said they were shocked to hear Justice Nanavati's reported comments denying any lapse on the part of police or administration in controlling the communal clashes In several parts of the state, based on the evidence recorded so far.

They said TV channel had also carried Nanavati's interview where he made those comments, adding a pronouncement by a member of the Commission was a serious breach of judicial propriety.

The Commission was yet to initiate hearing in the city and Ahmedabad, worst affected during the communal riots, they added.

The commission's proceedings so far, instead of inspiring confidence in an `already demoralised group of people, most of whom come from poor and deprived background, have shown serious doubts about the impartiality, fairness and sincerity of the investigation, they alleged.

The Commission's attitude has affected the resolve of many witnesses, already under severe pressure, to depose openly and fearlessly before it, the activists added.
