No change in infiltration across LoC: DIA chief
Wednesday, June 18 2003 22:44 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: A large number of Jehadi elements are still concentrated at the launching pads in Pakistan
occupied Kashmir (PoK) and there is no "perceptible change" in the infiltration pattern across the LoC,
the country's Defence Intelligence Agency Chief Lt Gen Kamal Davar said on June 18
"Despite pronouncements from Islamabad and Washington," Davar said, "terrorist infrastructure
remained intact across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir and infiltration is continuing at last year's levels".
Davar said that to hoodwink international opinion Pakistan was shifting terrorist training and launching
pads and a large number of Jehadis remained concentrated in
launching pads to be pushed across the line of control.
Reeling out figures, he said that 182 terrorists had been killed in last two months in Jammu and Kashmir
and declared a number of anti-militancy operations, besides the 'Operation Sarp Vinash' were
continuing.
Asked about the presence of Qaida terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, Davar said with linkages of groups
like Lashkar-e- Taiba and Jaish-e-Mahammad with al-Qaeda and Taleban, it would be no wonder if
these forces operated under a new garb.
He added that Indian troops are prepared to move at a "short notice" for deployment as part
of "stabilization" force in Iraq if the government gives the nod but it has been made clear they will
operate under New Delhi's
command and control.
"All battle procedures are in place for deployment if the government so desires," Davarsaid while
asserting that the Indian Army had the capability to operate anywhere.
Hinting that troops had been earmarked for deployment, Davar said once the decision is taken they can
be deployed at short notice.
He said the government was evaluating the pros and cons of deployment.
Asked if India could spare a large number of troops for such a deployment keeping in view the security
situation along the line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and North East, the DIA Chief said this
was one of the main questions being evaluated by the government in connection with any
participation in stabilisation force in Iraq.
