Kalam to visit Forward Post during 3-day JK visit
Wednesday, June 18 2003 14:21 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: In possibly the first ever visit by a President to a forward post in Jammu and Kashmir, A P J Abdul Kalam would be going to a location on the line of control (LoC) during his three-day tour to the state beginning on June 26.

Official sources said the President would be visiting a forward location in North Kashmir, where he was likely to meet Army jawans and local people, who have been a victim of unprovoked shelling by Pakistani troops from across the border.

The sources said arrangements were being made for gathering of children from the villages near the forward post, who would perform before the President during the brief visit.

Kalam, who will be visiting the state for the first time after taking over as the President of the country, is also likely to pay his obeisance at the famous shrine of Hazratbal, where the holy relic of Prophet Mohammed is kept, in Srinagar.

The sources said during his stay in Jammu, Kalam would also be paying obeisance at the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, besides visiting a camp of Kashmiri migrants, who left the valley at the onset of militancy.

The sources said the other engagements of the President included visit to a Buddhist monastery in Leh, addressing Srinagar-based 15 Corps troops and deliver a convocation address of the Jammu University.

Kalam would present the President's Colour to Jammu and Kashmir police for their continued fight against militancy for over a decade.

The ceremony would take place at the Police Training College at Udhampur, near Jammu. Kalam would also be attending an Indian Air Force function there.

The common thing for the President's visit at all the three places – Jammu, Leh and Kashmir – is his meeting with the children.

Meanwhile, extensive security drill was underway for his visit with strict monitoring of all exit and entry points.

Several personnel from the Counter-Insurgency Grid, involved in tackling militants, were being drawn for the security purpose.
