Benazir Bhutto asks US to sever ties with Musharraf
Thursday, June 19 2003 20:10 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad: Days before President Pervez Musharraf begins his US visit, exiled former premier Benazir
Bhutto has asked Washington to review its relationship with him saying he was not able to contain al-
Qaida and Taleban from re-grouping in Pakistan.
In an interview to BBC, she also rejected US impression that backing Musharraf is going to save
Pakistan from rise of terrorism. "We think the opposite. The United States thinks that if anybody opposes
General Musharraf they are really muddying the waters and making a worst for the war against terror."
Asserting that US support to Musharraf would weaken the country's Opposition, she said under his rule,
al-Qaida grew and attacked World Trade Center in US and despite the recent crack down; both Qaida
and Taleban regrouped in Pakistan and attacked coalition forces in Afghanistan.
"I would like Washington to review its close relationship with Pervez Musharraf. It is under Musharraf's
watch that al-Qaida attacked the World Trade Center. I am not saying he had something to do with it...
but that it is under his watch that al-Qaida attacked the World Trade Center," she said.
Bhutto said Musharraf promised to stop al-Qaida fleeing into Pakistan.
"They fled into Pakistan and they are still being caught. It is under his watch that the defeated Taliban
have re-grouped and are attacking international peacekeepers in Afghanistan to drive them out of that
country," she said.
