No immediate dispatch of troops to Iraq: Fernandes
Thursday, June 19 2003 22:35 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: India on June 19 ruled out any immediate dispatch of troops to form part of stablisation force
in Iraq as several key questions raised with us on command and control, logistics and un involvement
remained
unanswered, Defence Minister George Fernandes said.
"Though talks have been held with officials from Pentagon and state department, these key clarifications
have remained unanswered by Washington", Fernandes said.
Asserting that there could be no decision on sending troops to Iraq till New Delhi got answers to all its
clarifications, Fernandes said the government would debate all pros and cons before making any final
commitment.
Asked about the reported opposition to Indian troop deployment voiced by the UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan in his meeting with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, the Defence Minister said all
these questions would be debated before the government took any final decision on deployment.
