Friday, June 20 2003 10:15 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: A gangster, owing allegiance to the underworld don Chhota Rajan, was killed in an encounter with police early on June 20 morning at Wadala in Central Mumbai, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that the gangster Raju alias Biku Kadam (28) would be coming to Wadala near BPCL road at 1.30 am (IST) to extort money from a businessman, police laid a trap at the area. On spotting the gangster, police asked him to surrender, but he started to fire.

Police retaliated in self-defence, seriously injuring Kadam.

The gangster was taken to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission, police said, adding that Kadam was involved in six serious cases of murder, robbery and extortion.
