BJP seeks support for Kanchi seer's initiative
Monday, June 23 2003 17:34 Hrs (IST)
Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on June 23 sought support for Kanchi Shankaracharya
Jayendra Saraswati's initiative to resolve the Ayodhya issue and refused to enter into "public debate"
with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on the seer's plan.
"If Kanchi seer is taking initiative to solve the issue amicably, all should support him without creating
hurdles," party president Venkaiah Naidu told reporters.
On the VHP's objection to the "secret parleys" on the Kanchi seer's plan for a solution to the vexed
problem and BJP's attempt to defuse the situation, the BJP leader said, "We do not want a public debate
with the VHP over this issue."
Naidu termed as "propaganda" the argument that the BJP came to power on Ram mandir issue.
"It is wrong that we have reached the power seat at the Centre due to Ram Mandir issue. It is mere
propaganda," Naidu said, adding his party, which is main constituent of the National Democratic Alliance
(NDA), had fought the last Lok Sabha elections on a manifesto prepared jointly by coalition parties.
"We did not fight election on the agenda of BJP, which is for construction of Ram temple at that place,"
he said.
Naidu said at the "Chintan Baithak" in Mumbai it was decided that "our future campaign would be based
on three focal points of security, development and good governance".
