President trying to make nuclear power "irrelevant"
Monday, June 23 2003 16:19 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: After helping India acquire the nuclear power, President A P J Abdul Kalam is now grappling with the task of making such capabilities "irrelevant" in the world.

Addressing a function in New Delhi, Kalam said he and his team members, who were instrumental in Pokhran tests, were lauded by noted Jain Muni Acharya Mahapragya for producing a destructive weapon for defending the country, if needed.

He said at the same time, the Jain Muni also wanted he and his colleagues "now to discover a system to make the nuclear weapon insignificant, irrelevant and ineffective.

"How to make it (irrelevant)? It is a difficult task," the President said releasing the Acharya's two books "Find Your Spiritual Centre" and "Quest for Truth".

Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, who was also present on the occasion, said though factors like defence, economy and advancements in knowledge field decided a country's strength, spiritual power always remained a power of strength for India.
