17 killed as Karwar-Mumbai Express derails

Mumbai: At least 17 people were killed and more than two dozen injured after the 904 Karwar-Mumbai Central Holiday Special Express derailed near Ratnagiri in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on June 22 night.

The accident took place at between Rajapur in Ratnagiri district and Vaibhavwadi. The train, bound for Mumbai from Karwar was passing through the Nerle tunnel when 2 general coaches, 1 AC coach and an engine derailed.

"The boulders and mud had rolled on the tracks due to a possible landslide as the region had been witnessing heavy rains in the last four days," Konkan Railway sources said.

"The rescue work is on and we fear some more may be dead. The injured and the dead have been moved to local hospitals," sources added.
