2 Taleban leaders, others held at Pak-Afghan border
Monday, June 23 2003 07:51 Hrs (IST)
Quetta: Pakistani authorities have arrested five militants, including two Taleban leaders, at the Pak-
Afghan border.
"The authorities have also confiscated a huge quantity of arms, including landmines, hand grenades,
rocket launchers, SMG rifles, missiles, Kalashnikov rifles and thousands of bullets loaded on a truck,"
source requesting anonymity said on June 22.
Among those arrested was also a smuggler of arms but the authorities are keeping the names of
Taleban leaders secret as they are expecting some vital information about the militants hiding in the
area.
According to the Pakistani authorities, the arms were meant for the Taleban and al-Qaida to help them
target American interests in Afghanistan.
The grand operation was launched on June 21 in Pakistan as well as in Afghanistan. US troops also
launched a similar operation in Eastern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan to track down the fugitives in
Afghan territory.
US soldiers arrived on June 20 with helicopters and vehicles at the border and started the operation on
June 21 to take control of the border and mountain areas rather than search houses, the sources said.
US soldiers were going along the Kabul river, where it forms the border with Pakistan and were
accompanied by Afghan interpreters. Suspected Taleban and al-Qaida men regularly launch attacks on
foreign and pro-government forces in the mountainous border region, officials said.
Pakistan and US authorities are coordinating at intelligence level for the success of the operation
following the recent deadly attacks on the American interests in Afghanistan.
