AIMPLB to consider seer's proposals with "open mind"
Tuesday, June 24 2003 07:51 Hrs (IST)
Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) was "unanimous" in its decision to consider
with an "open mind" the Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswati's proposals to resolve the Ayodhya tangle.
"There is no difference of opinion among the members of the Board with regard to considering the
Kanchi seer's proposals," AIMPLB spokesman Maulana Sajjad Nomani told reporters in Lucknow on
June 24.
Referring to the voices of criticism being aired by some Muslim religious leaders, he said that these were
the result of speculation in the media regarding the nature of the seer's proposals.
"The media keeps on publishing speculative news about the nature of the proposals as a result of which
some people from both sides also air their views," he said.
He expressed confidence that such voices would die down once the proposals were tabled for
consideration in the AIMPLB's working committee meeting slated for July 6.
Refusing to disclose the nature of the proposals, Nomani said that the proposals had been kept in the
safe custody of the AIMPLB chairman Maulana Rabe Hasan Naqvi.
Even the 51 members of the AIMPLB working committee have no idea about the proposals, he said,
adding they would come o know about it only during the working committee's meeting.
On being asked about the recent statements of the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Ahmad Bukhari and the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) opposing the Board's decision to discuss the seer's proposals, Nomani
said that they should wait till the proposals were made public.
Nomani said that the Board, which was an apex body of the Muslims and represented various Muslim
schools of thought, would consider all aspects before arriving at any decision with regard to the seer's
proposals.
Asked for his comments on the reported statement of some Muslim religious leaders that according to
the Shariat (Islamic jurisprudence) the land of the masjid could not be
used for any other purposes, he said that the AIMPLB, while taking a decision, would consider the
Shariat laws as well.
Nomani said the Board would look at the proposals from every angle before taking any decision.
